THE official countdown to choosing the first elected mayor of Greater Manchester has begun.

The formal notice of election has been published for the historic vote on May 4, with the count and result declaration taking place the following day.

People in the borough are being urged to make sure they are registered to vote.

Donna Hall, returning officer for Wigan Council, said: “The mayor of Greater Manchester will play a key role in setting the priorities for our region, helping to shape the future of our borough and the nine other areas in Greater Manchester.

"This is the Wigan borough’s chance to stand up and be counted, so it is vital that residents get registered and get voting when the time comes.”

Leigh MP Andy Burnham, Labour's candidate for the new post created as part of the region's pioneering devolution deals, is the bookies' favourite to take over the reins from interim mayor Tony Lloyd.

To be able to vote residents will need to be on the electoral register by April 13.

Registration is a quick and easy process. You can visit gov.uk/register-to-vote to download a registration form, needing just your date of birth and national insurance number.

If you need to update your details, for example if you have moved house or changed surname through marriage, you need to contact the council.

Details of all confirmed candidates for the mayoral election will be published on April 5.
