HIKERS have completed a 24-mile trek to raise more than £800 to fund a mother’s cancer treatment.

The journey took place on Saturday and started from Rivington Pike at 8.45am and went to Darwen Tower and back at around 5.45pm to generate funds for Polly Haydock, from Atherton, who is in the process of having revolutionary immunotherapy at the Hallwang Clinic in southern Germany.

There were 21 people who completed the challenge with members of charity Sally’s Army also participating in the event in memory of Sally Duncan who died from ovarian cancer last year.

Wesley Lawlor, 39, a friend of Polly who completed the walk alongside partner Jackie, said: “I think it would have actually been easier to do the London Marathon the following day because of the hilly terrain.

“It was a very tough because of how demanding the course was.

“Me and Jackie stepped up our fitness in the gym leading up to the event but nothing could have prepared us for how difficult it was.

"“We were all exhausted during the hike but we were determined to complete it for Polly.”

“It was emotional for us all when we completed the challenge because of what we did it for.”

There has been more than £221,000 raised for Polly so far which is more than half of the £410,000 the family are aiming to generate for the cost of her treatment.
