A COLLEGE student had a special affect on judges as she won a Greater Manchester Colleges Group (GMCG) skills competition.

Kim Slack, who studies media make-up at Wigan and Leigh College, transformed her model into The Grand High Witch, inspired by Roald Dahl's The Witches.

Her talent for special effects earned her first place in a GMCG hair and beauty competition at the Choices Skills Show at EventCity in Manchester and she will now represent the region at national level.

Wigan and Leigh College media make-up tutor Gemma Betton said: “To create the piece Kim actually started from scratch and chose to cast her model's face to try to make her prosthetic pieces as bespoke as possible.

"Kim went to great lengths to ensure that her model’s outfit and accessories finished the piece exactly to her vision.”

Kim studies at the college's Image Centre in Leigh.

Alongside her studies the former St Mary's Catholic High School pupil also works in theatre productions and has been asked to recreate The Grand High Witch for a local theatre.

Kim said: “I have really enjoyed my two years at Wigan & Leigh College’s Image Centre and I would definitely recommend the course to anyone who has a passion for creative make-up.

"Winning the title just brought together the two years of hard work and I cannot be more grateful to my tutors, especially Gemma, who has supported me through my time at the college.”
