WORK to improve Leigh town centre is set to start next Tuesday.

The preliminary work for the regeneration of Bradshawgate and Albion Street will include the installation of block paving, modern seating, LED lighting and tree planters to create a more attractive environment for shoppers, visitors and businesses.

Wigan Council has funded and will manage the regeneration of Market Place.

Karl Battersby, director for economy and environment, said: “We are pleased that the regeneration work in Leigh town centre is to start on site.

"The works are planned in a way which will keep disruption to a minimum.”

The phased work will see street furniture removed in June.

Work will take place on Bradshawgate between Vernon Street and Bold Street between June and August.

Bold Street and Silk Street will take centre stage between July and September and work on Albion Street and Gas Street from August to October will round off the project.

Access for businesses will be maintained during normal business hours.
