WORK has begun on a near £1 million regeneration of Leigh town centre.

These photographs show the demolition of Leigh Outdoor Market on Albion Street on Monday.

The outdoor market stalls will relocate to a central location on Bradshawgate with increased visibility and improved access.

The demolition of the old market canopy will create a better approach to the indoor market along Albion Street and open up access to the market hall from Bradshawgate.

Karl Battersby, Wigan Council’s director for economy and environment, said: “We are delighted the work to improve Leigh town centre is under way.

“This is one of the most popular parts of Leigh and we want the town centre to offer a high quality public realm environment for both visitors and businesses.

“The regeneration will include improvements to the outdoor market with a new central location on Bradshawgate.

“Feedback on the plans has been positive from businesses and traders and we will work with our contractors to keep any disruption to a minimum.”

£5 million has been set aside by the council to regenerate the town centre.

This initial stage will see block paving, modern seating, LED lighting and tree planters create a more attractive space for shoppers, visitors and businesses.

Work will take place on Bradshawgate between Vernon Street and Bold Street until August.

Bold Street and Silk Street will take centre stage between July and September and work on Albion Street and Gas Street from August to October will round off the initial stage of the regeneration project.

The council is yet to decide on how the other £4 million will be used to improve the town centre.
