TWO high achievers will be stars of Leigh forever after receiving the Hollywood Walk of Fame treatment outside the town hall.

The names of the leading points scorer in Leigh Centurions' history John 'Woody' Woods and leading businessman Richard Waterfield were added to the stone stars on Civic Square yesterday in reward for their many years of hard work and loyalty to their home town.

Both men attended the ceremony, as did Woody's fellow Leigh rugby league legend Alex Murphy, the new mayor and mayoress of the Wigan borough Cllr Bill Clarke and his wife Joan and the leader of Wigan Council Lord Peter Smith.

“It is an honour to be recognised in this way and I am so grateful to the council for giving me this star," said Woody, who has also been immortalised with a statue outside the Centurions' Leigh Sports Village stadium having scored 2,492 points for the club when he starred for them in the 1970s and 80s.

“It was a great day hearing about Richard’s achievements and the reasons why I was nominated for this acknowledgement.

“As a Leyther it was also especially honouring to have Alex Murphy with me as he was my rugby inspiration.”

It was a double celebration for Richard, as it was also his grandson Isaac's first birthday.

Richard, who is widely known for his work managing the family-run Waterfields bakery business and has also recently been a member of the Wigan Forward Board, said: “Receiving this star means a great deal to me and I had a lovely morning celebrating with Wigan Council and my family.

"The Wigan borough, specifically Leigh, is one of the nicest places in the country to live and the people are extremely friendly, so I am proud to have my star here.

"I believe in our borough and feel that events like these reinforce pride among the community."
