LEIGH'S MP has written to the Government asking for the HS2 plans to be adapted so the new high speed rail line is more accessible for her constituents.

The line is set to run through Wigan town centre and Lowton, with the only nearby stop for Leigh residents being Wigan railway station.

MP Jo Platt is relieved the plans have been changed so that a HS2 depot will be built in Crewe and not Lowton, but she is hoping for further tweaks to be made.

She wants an improved transport infrastructure to be implemented to enable Leigh residents to benefit from the high speed public transport.

She said: “Although we are pleased the unpopular depot will be located elsewhere, residents across the constituency will want to know how they will benefit from the new line.

“Wigan will be the nearest gateway onto the new network, but with journey times from Leigh to Wigan taking almost an hour using public transport we need a better way to enable residents here to access it.”

In her letter to transport secretary Chris Grayling, Miss Platt questioned how the construction phase of the line will be managed in order to minimise the impact on her constituents.

She told him that ‘the people of Leigh will not be unrewarded in terms of investment and connectivity’.
