MOURNERS gathered together and a church bell rang as mum-of-three Polly Haydock was laid to rest.

The service for Polly, who died aged 37 last Tuesday after a brave battle with cancer, was held at St James' Church in Westhoughton, Bolton, yesterday.

More than 100 people looked on as Polly, from Atherton, was carried into the church as the Sting song Fields of Gold played.

Her husband Dan gave a touching tribute in the form of a letter to his late wife, whom he described as his 'baby' and 'best friend'.

As well as thanking friends and family for their support, he also praised everyone who helped to raise money for the Polly's Angels fund.

Onlookers said prayers and sang hymn All Things Bright And Beautiful before the final commendation.

Polly was carried out to the tune of Somewhere Over The Rainbow before a committal at Howe Bridge Crematorium in Atherton.

She was diagnosed with bowel cancer in October 2015.

Polly was only given six months to live by doctors last July after the disease spread into her lymph nodes, bones, liver and lungs but managed to fight it for more than a year.

A fundraising campaign that included question and answer sessions with comedian Peter Kay generated a total of £223,620 for Polly, who used the money to undergo revolutionary treatment at the Hallwang Clinic in southern Germany.

Polly is survived by Dan and their three children Darcy, Emma and Alex.
