THREE community groups are to bag grants of up to £4,000 as part of a supermarket scheme.

Resolutions, Golborne Sports Junior Football Club and Pennington FC have been selected as the winners of Tesco's national Bags of Help scheme for the supermarket chain's stores in Leigh and Atherton.

The scheme sees grants of £4,000, £2,000 and £1,000, raised from carrier bag sales in Tesco stores, being awarded to community projects.

Customers' votes at the Tesco stores in Leigh and Atherton will decide which of the community groups will receive the top prize of £4,000 and which will get the £2,000 runner up grant.

Shoppers will be able to cast their vote using a token given to them at the checkout.

Resolutions has devised a Games Unplugged initiative aimed at encouraging families to put their smartphones and other devices away and spend time talking and playing a range of board games together.

The sessions will be held at Higher Folds Community Centre in Stirling Close, Leigh, with a raffle offering the chance to win board games.

Golborne Sports JFC has applied for a grant to put measures in place to stop its playing fields being destroyed by vehicles.

The club plays its home games at Golborne High School.

Pennington FC is hoping to secure funding to pay for new goalposts as the ones at its Hansom Drive home in Atherton are considered to be unsafe.

Tesco teamed up with environmental charity Groundwork for the Bags of Help scheme.
