A MAN has been convicted of a vicious assault on a pregnant woman.

Darren Glover, of Marshall Street, Leigh, used his head as a weapon in the attack on January 22.

The 22-year-old denied the assault and intentionally damaging the victim’s phone when he appeared at Wigan and Leigh Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday but he was found guilty of both offences.

He had earlier admitted stealing a pair of her £90 glasses.

Glover was given a four-week prison sentence suspended for 12 months and ordered to comply with a year-long curfew order with electronic monitoring as well as a rehabilitation activity requirement.

He must also pay £700 compensation, a £115 victim surcharge and £200 court costs.

Carl Browitt, of Woodland Avenue, Hindley Green, was ordered to carry out 140 hours of unpaid work after admitting assaulting three males, including a police constable in Wigan, on September 15.

On top of the community order the 53-year-old must pay £50 compensation to each of the three victims as well as an £85 victim surcharge and £85 court costs.

Sharon Browitt, also of Woodland Avenue, was ordered to carry out 100 hours of unpaid work after admitting assaulting two of the males, including the PC, on the same day.

The 51-year-old must also pay £50 compensation to her victims as well as an £85 victim surcharge and £85 court costs.

Stuart Jones, of Astley Moss, and Andrew McDonald, of Platt Street, Leigh, will be sentenced at Bolton Crown Court.

They both admitted using or threatening unlawful violence towards other people and carrying an offensive weapon in a public place in Leigh on July 15.

Jones, 36, had a metal rod and McDonald, 37, had a hammer.

Jones also admitted being caught in possession of cannabis resin.

They are set to be sentenced on November 1.

Matthew Emmison, of Defiance Street, Atherton, was found guilty of assaulting a woman, intentionally damaging her mobile phone and driving a car when he knew it had been taken without the owner’s consent.

The 33-year-old denied the offences committed in Atherton on June 23 but he admitted drink driving on that date.

He is due to return to the court for sentencing on October 26.

The case was adjourned for a pre-sentence report to be prepared.

A pre-sentence report will also be prepared for Michael Warburton, of Sandringham Drive, Leigh, who admitted intentionally damaging a window to the value of £100 on August 29 and breaking bail conditions.

Following an adjournment, the 49-year-old is due to return to the court for sentencing on October 24.

David Mawdsley, of Firs Lane, Leigh, admitted drink driving in the town on September 13.

The 66-year-old was banned from driving for 20 months and ordered to pay a £120 fine, a £30 victim surcharge and £85 court costs.

Dennis Unsworth, 36, of Wordsworth, Leigh, pleaded guilty to being drunk and disorderly in the town on September 12 and must pay a £40 fine, a £30 victim surcharge and £85 court costs.

Warrants were issued for the arrests of Thomas King, of Shadwell Grove, Leigh, and Marie Derbyshire, of Abbey Lane, Leigh, after they failed to turn up at court in answer to bail.

King, 23, is accused of an arson attack that caused £5,500 worth of damage to a council house on February 5 and Derbyshire, 38, faces fraud charges.
