THE family of a 13-year-old boy, who has been fighting brain cancer since he was a baby, say they are ‘amazed’ after receiving news that some of the diseased cells are shrinking.

Tyler Yates, of Farnham Close, Leigh, was diagnosed with a brain tumour on his first birthday and has since undergone three brain surgeries, five rounds of chemotherapy and two of radiotherapy.

Grade four tumours were discovered in his brainstem in January leading doctors concluding that surgery to remove them is not an option, however, after his extensive treatment the family received good news that some of the cells and tumours have shrunk – giving him a better quality of life.

His mum Pamela 40, said: “He was feeling poorly and had a seizure and the scans he had because of that found that the disease had actually shrunk in his brain.

“We were all amazed because this makes his life a little bit easier.

“He was thrilled but all he wanted to know is if he could go back to school.

“The doctors were shocked, we are so grateful.”

Pam and her husband Alex, 43, set up a JustGiving page to raise money for Bedford High pupil Tyler to have treatment in America, raising £12,000 in donations, however, they were told that this treatment was no longer an option and have instead used to money to give Tyler experiences.

Pam added: “With the funds we’ve got him to fly in a plane and a helicopter and he even flew a biplane himself for a bit.

“He’s been driven around in a Porsche, Ferrari and Audi R8, fed a tiger and met with huskies who pull sleds who came up and licked his bad arm – it was lovely for him.

“It’s all about making him happy and giving him something to look forward to – and this money has made that happen – so thank you.”
