LEIGH Centurions Senior Academy continued their impressive recent form with a nine try, 50-14 victory at the Hillsborough Arena last night. Highlights included a 16 point tally from full back Ian Mort, a hat-trick from centre Tom Woodcock, an imperious display from scrum-half Ryan Powell and a winning return to the club for Liam Coleman.

Superbly directed around the field by Powell, the Centurions took control after gifting Sheffield an early advantage. Tom Gray booted a penalty for the hosts with less than a minute on the clock and when Caldon Bravo intercepted a stray pass to go the full length of the field, Leigh trailed 8-0.

The Eagles promising start continued as James Morrow and Gray opened the Leigh defence only to see passes to supporting men go to ground. Leigh gradually worked their way into the game and a sweeping move down the right saw Powell release versatile Danny Pyke and the loose forward raced to the line from 30 metres. Although Mort missed the conversion, he was on hand to score six minutes later after Woodcock sliced through. His conversion made is 10-8 in Leigh's favour and the fluent attack continued.

Sheffield again went close to scoring but when they conceded a penalty, Leigh quickly moved through the gears with Chad Isles and Powell passing wide for Darryl Kay to break the line. Unselfishly, Kay drew two defenders to him and slipped the ball out for John Boland to go over for a six pointer.

Leigh's domination down their right hand channel was all too obvious after 31 minutes when Powell and Pyke moved play at pace and Woodcock notched the first of his treble. With the final play of the half Powell kicked a drop-goal and Leigh led 21-8.

Once more Sheffield got away to a flyer at the start of the second half when Grant Farrow hit a gap to race over. Nick Wall converted but that was as close as it got. Lee Gittins touched down after 48 minutes and after Powell's second 40-20 kick of the night, Woodcock bumped off a defender and ran on for the Centurions 6th try.

Just after the hour Woodcock grabbed his hat-trick score following smart work from Coleman but Leigh were far from done with Benjamin slipping two tackles to ground his 9th try of the season after 66 minutes.

Trailing 43-14, the Eagles let their discipline lapse in the final minutes.

First Wall was given his marching orders after 72 minutes for alleged use of the elbow on Benjamin, then former Doncaster prop Tom Buckenham was sin binned for questioning a further decision after 76 minutes.

Leigh immediately made their advantage count when a smart pass from Powell saw Danny Meekin open his try account for the season in spectacular style.

There was still enough time for the Centurions to drive into range and Powell dropped a second goal from 30 metres to bring up the half century and their third win on the bounce.
