STAR readers are in support of plans to change an historic former pub which has been left derelict into a health care facility for adults with mental health issues.

Following an article published online outlining plans to change the former Rams Head, on Kenyon Lane South in Haydock, readers have commented saying how they are pleased with the proposal of transforming what was becoming an eyesore.

If plans are accepted, the site will be refurbished and the barn adjacent will be converted to offer a total of 10 rooms dedicated to care and rehabilitation of young adults with illnesses such as dementia, Huntington’s and degenerative brain conditions.

The external façade of the landmark building will remain unchanged – although there will be the addition of an enclosed staircase to link the buildings.

Kendra Moss via Facebook said: “St Helens needs a lot more places to treat the young of the town. It’s shocking the amount of young people with mental health issues that are not getting the care needed.

“There are plenty for the elderly, and their close family could do more for them. Let’s start looking after the younger ones of the town.”

Nicola Griffin added: “Finally something happening with it.”

Original features and detailing will be repaired and replaced where necessary. Meanwhile, windows, which are no longer present, will be recreated, with developers using historic photographs. Access to the building will remain unchanged.
