APPROXIMATELY 20,000kg of chicken legs will be incinerated after being deemed to be unsafe for human consumption.

Nineteen pallets of chicken stacked 5ft high were confiscated from Chicken Delight on Platt Lane in Hindley by Wigan Council’s environmental health team on October 19.

The company had contravened a notice preventing the food from being prepared or sold for human consumption.

The noticed was served as the site had not been approved as a cold store and conditions were deemed to not fully comply with the hygiene requirements for a food premises.

Chicken Delight did not provide relevant documentation to show where the chicken had come from and Wigan and Leigh Magistrates’ Court ordered it to be destroyed on Friday.

Mark Tilley, assistant director for infrastructure and regulation at the council, said: “We are pleased the court has ordered this unfit chicken to be destroyed.

“This follows excellent proactive work from our environmental health team, which executed a warrant and prevented this unfit food from potentially being sold and entering the food chain.”
