A CHRISTMAS appeal launched by funeral directors has attracted 94 shoeboxes of belongings and bags of clothes, duvets and pillows which will be given to homeless people.

Abbey Funeralcare, Abbey Funerals Co-op Funeralcare and Paul Dainton Funeral Directors, who have bases in Leigh, Atherton and Tyldesley, teamed up in November asking people to donate shoeboxes covered in Christmas wrapping paper with essential items for people sleeping rough.

Donations from the Christmas Shoebox Appeal, which include gifts such as scarves, gloves, warm socks, toothbrushes and soap, were dropped off at the Homeless Support Project on Railway Road in Leigh on Monday where they will be distributed to their service users.

Barbara Grundy from Abbey Funerals said: "Thank you to the people of Tyldesley, Atherton, Leigh, Astley and the surrounding areas for helping us in this appeal.

"We are completely overwhelmed with their kindness and the unbelievable response we have had."
