A BAKERY is getting behind a campaign to support domestic abuse victims.

Waterfield’s Bakery, which has an outlet on Union Street in Leigh, is backing the campaign with men wearing white ribbons to show their support against domestic abuse against women.

The bakery marked international White Ribbon Day by handing out cakes in Leigh town centre with symbols on them to raise awareness of domestic abuse.

Company owner Richard Waterfield said: “As a company we are delighted to support the White Ribbon campaign.

“Businesses have an important role to play in supporting employees who may be victims and under an incredible amount of stress.

“People also sometimes forget domestic abuse happens to males in the family as well as females so it is important to be aware of the signs and as a company we have heightened awareness.”

The company is one of the first in the borough to sign to a workplace policy which will help give advise on how to manage and support an employee suffering from domestic abuse.

The policy guidance has been created by the council and Wigan Clinical Commissioning Group.

Wigan Council chief executive Donna Hall said: “I would like to thank Richard for his personal leadership on this serious problem.

“The workplace policy provides simple steps employers can take to respond to this important issue.

“It is important managers are aware of the warning signs that might suggest a member of staff may be suffering from domestic abuse as well as the sources of support available to victims.”
