RACE organisers are hoping to attract more runners and make it an annual event after hundreds took part in its first one last year.

The second Leigh Community 10k, which will take place in the town centre on Sunday, August 12, was launched on Friday with MP Jo Platt in attendance at the town hall.

Around 600 people took part in the inaugural event last year with organisers setting a target of 1,000 runners this Summer.

Ms Platt said: “Last year was tremendous, there was a real buzz in the town centre.

“Wigan and Leigh Hospice is a charity close to many of our hearts and a worthy cause to raise money for whether you are running for fun or to beat your personal best.”

Last year’s event raised £10,000 for Wigan and Leigh Hospice, who care for more than 1,000 people with life-limiting illnesses.

Hospice chief executive Dr Alan Baron said: “We are delighted this event is back for a second year and once again supporting the hospice.

“We are fortunate to enjoy fantastic support from local people in Leigh who donate, volunteer their time and participate in fundraising events to help us raise the £8,700 a day we need in order to deliver all of our services.

“The funds raised through the race will help us to continue to provide care for local people who have been diagnosed with a life-limiting illness and support for their loved ones.”

Runners, joggers and walkers of any ability can participate which costs £17 for entry or £15 if you run for a UK Athletics or ARC Running Club.
