A GOLBORNE teenager is one of four college students who have been labelled “pillars of the community” for helping a man who was thinking about jumping off a bridge.

Nathan Kenyon, 17, was walking home from college with Connor O’Hara, Kaileb Walters and James Barnshaw when they saw a man by the M62 motorway bridge at Winwick in Warrington.

The public services students stayed with him and kept him calm.

Former Lowton High School student Nathan said: “We asked if he was ok and he said no – we knew then that something was not right.

“Kaileb and I put ourselves between him and the edge of the bridge and kept a gentle hand on him, partly for reassurance.

“Usually it is just me and Kaileb who walk home that way but we could not have done it on our own – we all pulled together.”

There was a delay in police attendance after being told the wrong location by members of the public.

Kaileb added: “We were talking about normal things like football.

“He was a really nice, genuine guy who was obviously in a state of distress.”

The incident was captured on CCTV with motorway police tweeting about the “unsung heroes.”

Cheshire Police Inspector Hannah Friend, who presented the four students with “Good Citizen” awards on Monday, said: “These individuals have acted with compassion, bravery and selflessness.

“They have demonstrated the best qualities of community spirit and have rightly been described as “pillars of the community” for their outstanding assistance.”
