SOME bus services in Leigh are set to be altered due to “low passenger numbers” it has been confirmed.

The changes are to come into force in April as a shake-up of services for the borough is implemented.

The amendments are to be introduced following an analysis of the viability of specific routes, times and their frequency.

Transport for Greater Manchester have confirmed that some changes are to be put into place this spring.

They said that they are to be cutting a route between Leigh and Higher Folds.

The half-hourly 673 service will become an hourly service as part of the changes.

A TfGM spokesperson said: “Transport for Greater Manchester currently subsidises the following daily evening services for the 658 – 9.25pm, 10.25pm and 11.15pm from Leigh and 10.08pm and 11.08pm from Wigan.

“These services operate between Wigan and Leigh, with the 673 service serving the route between Leigh and Higher Folds every half hour.

“Due to low passenger numbers, the 673 will now become an hourly service from 10pm and the service will be renumbered to 658.”

They added: “We have also been made aware that the operator, Stagecoach, intends to withdraw the Sunday and Bank Holiday 9.30pm 658 service from Wigan.

“To cover this, TfGM will also introduce a new subsidised Sunday and Bank Holiday service from Wigan at 9.13pm.

“These changes were approved by members of a Transport for Greater Manchester subcommittee on Friday, March 9 and will be implemented from Sunday, 8 April.”
