A ROAD junction in Leigh has put more motorists at risk than any other in the borough for the last three years.

A Freedom of Information Act request has shown that there has been at least 14 road traffic collisions recorded at the junction at Kirkhall Lane and Atherleigh Way near Parsonage Retail Park since March 2015- five more than the next most dangerous area, which is close to Wigan town centre.

The East Lancashire Road junctions at Bridge Street in Golborne and Warrington Road in Leigh have also featured in the top 10 of most road accidents in the last year.

Mark Tilley, assistant director for infrastructure and regulatory services at Wigan Council, said: “There are no current proposals for the Kirkhall Lane and Atherleigh Way junction, however, we will look at whether there is anything we can do to support the safety of traffic flow in this area.

“Road safety is a huge priority for us to make sure our roads are not only more efficient but safer for all road users.

“Working with road safety colleagues and partners across Greater Manchester, we are working hard to be proactive in preventing road collisions where possible and investigate areas of concern to enable us to reduce future occurrence of road accidents.

“We also work closely with our partners at Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM), looking at areas and junctions of concern with common contributory factors which can be addressed through engineering and enforcement.

“As part of The Deal we encourage members of the public to let us know about their specific road safety concerns and think about taking part in our community led campaigns like Community Speed Watch.”
