A VOLUNTEER-run club is going down a storm with young people.

The Golborne Friday Night Youth Club meet every week at 6.30pm at Heath Street Methodist Church in Golborne and is for High School Year Eight to 11 pupils.

The club, which was set up following a Wigan Council-led residents consultation, offers activities such as pool, music, cooking, pool, badminton and cooking.

Megan Sharkey, 14, who attends the club, said: “It was so cold being outside in the winter so this is a great place to meet up with friends.”

Kyle Lynch, 12, added: “It is fun, gets us off the streets and gives us something to do.”

Due to the group’s popularity, the club are inviting more volunteers to get involved.

Volunteer Rob Edge: “You see a different side to young people when you work somewhere like this.

“Before I would only see them in groups on street corners and I might not have thought the best of them but now I have got to know them as people and it is great.

“Volunteering can be challenging but I would recommend it.’”

The youth club is supported by the Brighter Borough fund and Inspiring Healthy Lifestyles.

The charity The Gateway also loans equipment to it.

Cllr Yvonne Klieve, who volunteers, added: ‘We talked to lots of young people before setting up the club and they just wanted something to do and a place where they could go with their friends, especially in the winter.

"As part of The Deal we have committed to making sure there are more things for young people to do but we need volunteers to help us keep them running."

All volunteers are given training and advice.
