Heritage meeting

Atherton Heritage Society is hosting its next event at St Richard's Parish Hall on Mayfield Street on Tuesday night.

Speaker Frances Raftery will be talking about the subject of The Crown Jewels at 7.30pm.

Admission is £2 including refreshments and all visitors are welcome.

Anyone for tennis?

Atherton Park’s Hamilton Street tennis courts are back in play after a clean-up operation last year.

Players are invited to take their racquets for a game on Tuesdays from 6pm to 8pm and Sundays from 10am to noon.

There is no fee to pay at either of the sessions. 

The court refurbishment was led by the Friends of Athertons Park group and supported by Wigan Council’s The Deal scheme.

RAF Celebration

The Greater Manchester Police Big Band will be performing on Saturday, April 14 in Leigh to celebrate 100 years of the Royal Air Force this year.

The band will play at St Joseph’s Hall on Chapel Street in an RAF Centenary Celebration Ball which will start at 7.30pm.

The event has been organised by the Leigh branch of the RAF.

Church sale

A grand good as new sale will take place at Atherton Central Methodist Church on Saturday, April 14.

It will happen between 10am to 2.30pm at the hall opposite Atherton Town Hall.

Refreshments will be available. 

Entry for the event is free.

Disney screening

A special family screening of Disney’s Moana will take place at St George’s Parish Hall thanks to Leigh Film Society.

The screening, at 7pm on Friday, April 20, will include refreshments at the Tyldesley venue.

Tickets costing £3 for adults, £1.50 for children and £8 for a family ticket for two adults and three children are available for purchase by calling 07976 314012.

Creative walk

A family-friendly creative walk will take place at Pennington Flash Country Park on Saturday, April 21.

It will be held between 1pm to 3pm and will allow people to express themselves while exploring the landscape of the St Helens Road park.

Artist Catherine Hawkins will be providing materials such as handmade paper, drawing materials, wool and glue for the spring walk.

Anyone interested have been asked to dress for the spring outdoor weather by wearing waterproofs and good footwear.

Drinks and biscuits will be provided at the end of the trek.

The event will cost £6 for adults or £5 for concessions.

Children will be able to attend for free.

Theatre performance

St Joseph’s Players theatre group is set to stage an Oscar Wilde melodrama on five consecutive nights.

A performance of An Ideal Husband will take place from Tuesday, April 24 to Saturday, April 28 at St Joseph’s Hall in Leigh with the shows starting at 7.30pm each evening.

The play, directed by Donna Wood, follows the life of respected London government official and loving husband Sir Robert Chiltern and his friend Lord Arthur Goring, a notorious womaniser.

But when old acquaintance Laura Cheveley arrives in the city, the two men’s lives are complicated and their true characters are revealed.

Tickets for the event cost £8 for adults and £4.50 for under 16s.

They can be bought in advance at the theatre’s box office at Spectrum Blinds on Chapel Street, opposite St Joseph’s Church, or on the door.

The theatre group will also put on a three-night show in September and a five-night one called This Happy Breed in October.

The group is also has roles for budding actors over 18 as well as back stage vacancies.

Railway display

A railway model exhibition will take place at Leigh Sports Village on Saturday, April 28.

It will be held in the indoor sports centre from 10am to 4pm.

Entry is £5 per adult and is free for accompanied children under 16.

Family fun day

A family fun day has been organised at Fred Longworth High School in Tyldesley on Bank Holiday Monday, May 7.

There will be a funfair, live music and a host of games from 11.30am to 4.30pm on the day.

A real ale bar will be provided by the Union Arms pub on Castle Street and a Jaffa Gin Bar will be there.

Makants Greyhound Rescue North West will have a spot at the event as well.

Live music and a guest DJ will be playing at the event.

Entry will be free.
