A MAN has been jailed for nine months after assaulting a woman and committing a string of thefts.

John Atherton, of Leigh Road, Leigh, pleaded guilty to the assault a woman in the town on February 20 when he appeared at Wigan and Leigh Magistrates' Court on Thursday.

The 41-year-old stole toiletries and laundry products from Home Bargains on the same day.

Atherton also admitted to stealing a watch on February 19 to the value of £299 at Precious Jewellery.

On February 21, Atherton took a charity box and sweets from Littlewoods Estate Agents along with meat and a toaster from Asda.

Earlier in February, Atherton made off with a grinding kit and power inverter from Halfords as well as memory cards from Wilkos.

On April 3, he also stole an electric toothbrush at Tesco and six days later he made off with a Philips razor to the value of £110 from Boots in Walkden.

The defendant also admitted causing more than £250 of damage to police cells.

He has been ordered to pay victim services surcharge fees amounting to £200, court costs of £85 and a compensation charge of £50.
