THE family of a woman who died after suffering with dementia have helped a cause close to their hearts.

Joyce Schofield, from Tyldesley, enjoyed a visit to Hope View Sensory Farm in Astley two years ago which provided a relaxing atmosphere which she later spoke fondly about on many occasions.

The Marsland Green Lane facility includes an array of animals and wildlife to provide comfort for people who live with Alzheimer’s or dementia.

Joyce's family raised £610 from donations which will be used to buy a new house for the llamas who live at the farm.

Her daughter Lynn Atherton said: "My mum had a lovely smile on her face when she went to the farm.

"She loved the Shetland ponies and the birds and allowed her to relax.

"After her visit she talked so much about the animals and reminisced about where the farm is located in Astley, which linked to her knowledge of the town.

"As a family we are overwhelmed with the donations we received and that we can put the money to good use."

Joyce died in February at the age of 81.

In her career, she worked as a cotton mill winder, a shopkeeper on Higher Green Lane in Astley and a carer.

She enjoyed crown green bowling and travelling.

Joyce's family also bought a bench which has been installed at the farm and includes a plaque of her.

They recently went there to look around the farm and were full of praise for the site and the staff.

The family will also be taking part in a sponsored walk which is being organised by the farm.
