The mayor of Wigan borough says he has had an "incredible year" in his position.

Cllr Bill Clarke has been to 466 official engagements in the last 12 months and supported charities including Parkinsons UK and the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

His wife Joan has accompanied him to events in her role as mayoress.

Cllr Clarke, 79, who represents Ashton, said: “It’s been an incredible year - really enjoyable and interesting.

“I’ve particularly enjoyed going into schools and speaking to the children.

“We have some wonderful children in the borough who are so knowledgeable.”

Cllr Clarke praised the talent of musical bands in the borough such as the Wigan Youth Jazz Orchestra.

Deputy mayor Cllr Sue Greensmith, who represents Leigh West, will be sworn in as the new mayor on Wednesday.
