A UNIVERSITY student from Leigh is getting ready to run more than two marathons in memory of his late auntie.

Jack Harper, of Brown Street North, is preparing for a 63-mile journey from Blackpool to Manchester in aid of Wigan and Leigh Hospice, which looked after his auntie Chris Harper, from Atherton, in 2012.

The 24-year-old is hoping to do the challenge in 12 hours.

The event on Sunday, July 8 is intended for cyclists in the Hindley hospice’s annual Manchester to Blackpool Bike Ride.

Ancient History student Jack said: “I took part in the bike ride last year with my dad and my uncle. I cycled from Manchester to Blackpool and then back again but I wanted to top that this year.

“I used to do a lot of running when I was in the army so I decided I would run.”

He will start at 4am from Trafford and run through Leigh, Aspull, Haigh, Standish, Preston and Lytham before getting to Blackpool at around 4pm.

He added: “Towards the end of our auntie Chris’ life the hospice staff were able to provide a safe and caring environment.

“This was invaluable as it allowed her to die with dignity and gave her a peaceful setting where she could say goodbye to those she loved. This gave comfort to both herself and those who loved her.”
