LEADERS in digital technology will share their knowledge in an event on Wednesday to discuss how the industry can be used to benefit companies.

A free business breakfast will take place at Wigan Town Hall's atrium and will include a range keynote speeches from successful digital bosses.

It will also give attendees the chance to collaborate on ideas to capitalise on technology.

Digital expert and author Warren Knight will be one one of the speakers.

His ambition is to help 100,000 global businesses sell products online by 2020.

David Rainford from the Higher Folds Community Centre, Steve McClean from Safety Management Consultancy Ltd and Ian Walker from 3P Logistics will all be speaking at the event too.

Council leader David Molyneux will open the event.

He said: “The event promises to be a productive one with speakers across a variety of sectors coming together to celebrate the benefits of digital technology and how we can use it to support economic growth.

“Through The Deal, we want residents and businesses to make the most of being online and be excited about digital technologies, so as a council, we should embrace these opportunities too and encourage others to share best practice.”

The business breakfast takes place in the same week as the Digital Leaders 100 week.

There are other events that will take place in the week as part of the council's Destination Digital programme.

There will be an iDEA (Duke of York’s Inspiring Digital Enterprise Award) information drop-in session for council staff to encourage them to build and develop their digital skills.

A visit to the Ancliffe bungalow for health professionals has been organised to raise awareness on how assistive technology can change lives.

A workshop about smart bus stops for the council’s digital partners with a view to develop a school competition with this theme in mind has been arranged too.

The council has also been shortlisted for a DL100 award under the "Digital Skills or Inclusion Initiative of the Year" category as a result of their work in introducing iDEA to the borough.

The local authority has won the Local Government Chronicle (LGC) award for Digital Council of the Year in the past and has been named Digital Leaders’ Digital Council of the Year.
