A PRIMARY and infants school will remain closed tomorrow, Tuesday, after travellers set up camp on a neighbouring field.

Caravans and supporting vehicles parked on land close to St Thomas' CE Junior and Infant School in Golborne on Saturday.

Reports have been made that the school fence was damaged leaving the site's security exposed.

Wigan council has confirmed that the travellers have left the site today, Monday.

Paul Barton, director for environmental services at the council, said: "The unauthorised traveller encampment on the land next to St Thomas' school in Golborne has now left the area and our street scene team are currently on site to clean up, repair the fence and secure the site.

“The school will remain closed tomorrow until cleansing is complete but will reopen on Wednesday.

"We would like to thank local residents for their cooperation.”
