IT is well known that prices for flights and hotels go up during school holidays.

An investigation by a travel search engine found some flights can rise by more than £450 per person to some destinations during school holidays.

But Kayak.co.uk has also found some destinations go up far less.

Here's some of the more costly increases followed by the destinations which go up far less:

Orlando – flights up by an average of £268

In early June, flights can be had for as low as an average of £396.

However, those wanting to go in August will pay an average of £626 – and as much as an average of £664 in the second week of the month.

For a family of four, this could mean that flight prices alone are over £1,000 more expensive than going just a few weeks earlier.

The good news for families, however, is that average hotel prices do not go up.

Zanzibar, Tanzania – flight prices up by an average of nearly £450

The popularity of Zanzibar is skyrocketing – with searches up over 100% compared to last summer.

The bad news is prices for flights during the school holidays also skyrocket.

Average prices throughout June are £392 and bottom out an average of £355 in the second week.

However, in August, the average flight prices rise to £747 and peak at £803 in the first week of the month.

However, flights in the last week of July are just £597, meaning Brits can save £200 by going just a week earlier.

New York – flights up by an average of £200

June flight prices can be as low as an average of £342 early in the month but peak in the third week of August, averaging out at £551, over £200 more expensive.

There is very little difference in hotel prices between July and August – and in fact, June prices are more expensive than either.

Malaga – flight prices on average nearly double

Malaga is a popular European destination for a summer holiday – and flight prices in the second week of July (before school holidays start) are a reasonable £81.

But fast forward three weeks, and average prices for August increase to £144 – 78% more.

It is the same story with hotel prices, which rise to an average of £154 per night for the third week in August – compared to an average of just £107 in the first three weeks of July, before the schools break up.

Faro – flights up by an average of 83%

The Portuguese city of Faro is a great destination for a summer holiday – but the price is only great if consumers time it right.

Head off in the second week of July and the flight price is just £77.

But wait until August and the average is £141 – a rise of 83%.

There is a significant rise in hotel prices too. Average prices in June are £91, but in the third week of August, travellers will be paying an average of £148.

Alicante – hotel costs can double on average

British favourite Alicante offers sun and sea in spades, and average flight prices for a mid-July break in the second or third week of the month come in at just £88.

But look ahead just one week, and the average price for a flight in August is £145.

When it comes to hotels, prices can be as low as £69 a night in June, but peak at an average of £133 for the third week of August, almost double.

Izmir (Turkey) – flights up by an average of 149%

Turkey’s third largest city after Antalya and Istanbul sees its prices increase significantly.

Average flight prices in the fourth week in June are very reasonable – on average just £119.

However, these rise to an average of £281 in August, and peak at an average of £296 in the first week – a rise of a whopping 149%.

However, average hotel prices of just £43 make the flight prices slightly more palatable.

And where to go where prices don’t rise as much:

Split, Croatia

During the first three weeks of July – before the schools break up – the average flight price is £160, and this only rises to an average of £189 during the holidays, a moderate increase of £29.

And for those who can get away in the fourth week of July – the first week of the school holidays – flight prices are just £164, barely any more than before the school holidays.

And believe it or not, hotel prices are even cheaper during the school holidays.

For the first three weeks of July, the average prices are £206.

But from the fourth week of July and throughout August, average prices fall to £202

Hurghada, Egypt

A beach resort that stretches for 40km.

Average flight prices for the three weeks prior to the kids breaking up are £187, but in the first week of the school holidays, only rise to £224.

And even in the third week of August – the most expensive week at many other destinations – flight prices remain a reasonable £241.

Toronto, Canada

Flights average £486 for the three weeks in July before the kids break up, and only increase to £532 once they have – a rise of less than ten per cent.

And if you go in the right week prices can actually be less.

Average flight prices for the fourth week in August (when the kids are still off) are £450.

It’s a similar story with hotels – with prices only mildly rising from £152 to £167 over the same period.

Tivat, Montenegro

With a stunning harbour and located on the Bay of Kotor, Tivat is somewhere to visit before everyone else discovers it.

Average flight prices for the three weeks before the schools break up are £198, and although they rise to an average of £282 for the first two weeks of August, in the fourth week, flights fall to an average of £202.

Hotel prices linger around the £100-a-night mark throughout summer.
