MORE than 2,000 children showcased their sporting talent in the annual Leigh Sports Games.

Primary school pupils from more than 60 schools took part in events including archery, rugby, fencing and gymnastics at Leigh Sports Village.

Competitors were awarded Gold, Silver and Bronze medals in an Olympics style presentation.

Mayor of Wigan borough Cllr Susan Greensmith and former Team GB Olympic runner Jenny Meadows launched the sixth annual games.

Cllr Greensmith said: “This is a wonderful opportunity for the children.

“They have been given the chance to take part in events here and really feel like athletes.

“It’s really important that we give our children experiences such as this from an early age. It helps to build their confidence and gives them a taste of what the competitive environment is really like.”

Children who took part also brought in donations for Atherton and Leigh Foodbank which proved to attract the highest amount since the school games started.

Jenny Meadows added: “I never had the opportunity to come to a sports venue when I was young to represent my school.

“It’s a fantastic event and the children must feel so proud that they have been chosen to take part and enjoy these wonderful sports facilities.”

The event was supported by Lowton CE High School and coordinated by Wigan East School Games organiser Lesley McGreevy.

Support for the event was provided by Lowton CE High School pupils and students from neighbouring schools.
