A HIGH school has “turned a corner” according to its latest school inspection.

Inspectors from education watchdog Ofsted visited Lowton CE High School after its previous two reports were both given a rating of “requires improvement”.

A monitoring report of the Newton Road school was published on July 2.

The report stated: “There has been a sea change in the direction of Lowton.

“For too long the school has found it difficult to break through and become a good school.

“It has now turned a corner and there is a strong tide of improvement.

“Leaders, including governors, are determined to throw off the ‘requires improvement’ label and actions they have taken have started to bear fruit.

“School leaders have tackled the areas for improvement identified at the previous inspection.

“Plans for further development are detailed and focused on the correct priorities.

“Leaders know the school well and have an accurate view of its strengths and abiding weaknesses.

“Pupils spoke enthusiastically about the use of assessment in lessons to identify quickly the errors they have made. They find it helpful when teachers then go on to explain how to put these right.

“School leaders have established an intensive programme of staff training that has steadily improved the quality of teaching.”

Inspectors have asked for changes to be made in the mathematics department.

The report added: “Improvement in mathematics is palpable. New leadership of this department combined with strong support from senior leaders have had considerable positive impact.

“Senior leaders and governors are taking effective action to tackle the areas requiring improvement identified.”

Lowton CE High School head teacher Julian Pollard was encouraged by the findings in the inspection.

He said: “I am very pleased with the monitoring inspection and it shows we are getting things right and going in the right direction.

“We have got a lot of hard work still to come but am looking forward to a fabulous set of results this year and Ofsted returning for the full inspection to truly reflect our performance now.”
