AN undercover operation is set to be carried out to check sunbed salons are asking for proof of age.
Last year Wigan Council’s trading standards team found that five out of 12 shops in the borough allowed children to use their facilities illegally.
A 15-year-old and 16-year-old took part in the operation over the summer holidays.
It is a criminal offence to offer or allow a person under 18 to use a sunbed with trading standards asking businesses to utilise a “Challenge 25” proof of age policy.
Cllr Carl Sweeney, cabinet member for environment at the council, said: “It is extremely important that sunbed salon owners are vigilant when allowing members of the public to use their sunbeds.
“We want to remind operators of their legal responsibilities so they can help to protect our children and young people.”
The council’s public health team has warned young people of the dangers of using sunbeds regularly.
If salon owners want information on the law relating to sunbeds by under 18s contact trading standards on 01942 827476 or e-mail ts@wigan.gov.uk.
