A MAN who had his home taken over by drug users and was financially exploited has been recognised after turning his life around.

David Monks, from Leigh, moved into supported accommodation last year with only the clothes he was wearing.

Drug users took over the 48-year-old's home and people exploited him financially.

He is unable to work due to having severe arthritis and did not claim benefits that he was entitled to.

David picked up the Making Space award for excellence at the charity’s Celebration of Happiness event at Blackpool Tower Ballroom.

He has been praised by staff at Waterhouse Court, where he lives, for the way he has overcome overcome obstacles and met his goals.

Support workers have said he has acted as a role model for tenants with his clean and tidy flat, helpful nature and positive attitude.

David said: “I’ve never won anything before and feel really proud to have been given this award.

“Since moving into Waterhouse Court, I look forward to every day and generally make the most out of life.”

David won one of the five awards that were handed out at the charity event.

Jackie Atkinson, a tenant support worker at Waterhouse Court, said: “David helps out around the scheme however he can and is always the first to take new tenants under his wing.

“Although his severe arthritis stops him from working, David does everything he can to keep himself busy and be helpful to others.

“He is fully deserving of this recognition for how he has overcome many challenges.”
