WIGAN Council has praised students in the borough after early reports indicate a "very high percentage of students" have passed their A Levels and equivalent qualifications.

The final pass rates will be released nationally in November.

Cllr Jenny Bullen, portfolio holder for children and young people at the council, has commended students and teaching staff for their commitment.

She said: “I’d like to congratulate everyone who has received their results today.

"I hope that the hard work our young people have put into their studies will have earned them the results they wished for.

“It is also important to recognise the support our young people have received through their dedicated teachers, support staff and families, who have positively contributed to their student’s future.

“We do recognise however, that not everything is that straightforward and for any young person who did not achieve the results they expected, it can be an extremely challenging time.

"But please be assured, you are not alone, there is a wide range of support available to assist you including directly from your school or college.”

Advisors will be available at Leigh Life Centre, now based at Leigh Library, for young people to discuss their options as well as Wigan Life Centre.

There will be an event on Bradshawgate in Leigh on Tuesday, August 28 from noon until 3pm where training, education and career options will be covered.

An NHS Public Health Traineeship event is set to take place at Wigan and Leigh College on Wednesday, August 29 from 10.00am.
