A GRANDAD has completed a 200km three-day series of events in memory of a family friend who died from breast cancer 15 years ago.

Shaun Moran, from Atherton, ran 50km on Thursday in several laps from Astley and Tyldesley Miners' Welfare Club to Lilford Park in Leigh to raise money for St Ann's Hospice, which looked after Gill Pimblott before she died.

He managed it in four hours and 57 minutes.

He then finished 100km on an exercise bike at Howe Bridge Leisure Centre in just under four hours on Friday.

On Saturday, Shaun notched up another 50km on the track in the Duke of Trail running event, which takes in the same route as Shaun done on Thursday.

Shaun, 59, who co-founded Astley and Tyldesley Road Runners in 2002, said: "I thought it would be a challenge to run 50km at one time on Thursday as I have never done that before.

"When I got through the first day that felt quite special.

"It was good to do the event in aid of a cause for Gill because she was such a nice girl.

"Since she died there have been memorial 5k races in her name but in the last few years we have decided to do different things like this.

"I would also like to thank everyone who gave their support by running alongside me and helping me on the way round."

There were around 80 people that ran the Duke of Trail event and Shaun done it alongside his friend Karl Waldie, who has dropped from 31 stone to 19-and-a-half stone in the space of two years.

Shaun has completed a number of long distance runs over the years including from Southport to Atherton in aid of charitable causes.

His daughter Katie, 28, added: "My family and I are all really proud of my dad.

"Every year he wants to challenge himself.

"It is amazing and all my friends are shocked that he is nearly 60 and still doing all these events."

A crowdfunding page has been set up by Shaun.
