VISITORS going to Leigh Canal Festival by car this weekend are advised to park at The Waterside Inn on Twist Lane and the towpath by Plank Lane bridge.

From there people will be able to get a complimentary water taxi, called the WAXI Service, to the festival which will be based outside Leigh Miners Welfare Institute.

The free event has 35 attractions and will take place from 10am to 5pm on both days with thousands set to visit the site.

Along the Leeds and Liverpool canal, there will be traders’ boats and a historic museum boat called George, which used to carry coal from Bickershaw Colliery.

There will be a funfair and stalls which provide information, displays of canal crafts and arts as well as food and drink.

Narrow boats based in the area are also expected to join the festival.

Free canoeing will also be on offer.

Kittiwake boats will provide canal trips and evening cruises for a charge.

Rugby matches including a ladies demonstration game will also be held.

On the first night, Saturday, the Miners club will host performances from a number of bands.

Entry for the festival is free after it has received sponsorship and support from community groups and businesses.
