A FAMILY is planning to sue the Royal Bolton Hospital over a superbug infection.
Health chiefs have received notification of intended litigation from the family because of an infection acquired at the hospital.
The news follows a warning last week from Bolton solicitor Louise Griffiths, who specialises in cases of alleged clinical negligence.
She said hospitals could face a surge of claims after actress Lesley Ash won a record £5 million out-of-court settlement from the NHS after she contracted the superbug, MRSA, at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital.
Heather Edwards, head of communication at the Royal Bolton, said: "In order to be successful, litigants have to prove that an infection was contracted through negligence on the part of the hospital and here at the Royal Bolton Hospital we take our duty very seriously.
"While it is recognised nationally that invasive procedures carry a risk of infection, we have a raft of measures aimed at reducing that risk."
Cases of MRSA and Clostridium difficile have fallen at the hospital in the last 12 months, but it is still failing to meet Government targets.
There were 16 cases of MRSA from April to September last year, five fewer than the same period in 2006.
Between April and December last year, there were 26 cases of MRSA.
The Government target, which is for the 12 months between April, 2007, and April, 2008, is just 16.
There were 209 outbreaks of Clostridium difficile between April and December last year, down from 279 in 2006 - a reduction of 25 per cent. Bolton Primary Care Trust had set the hospital a reduction target of 20 per cent, while there was none set by the Government for Clostridium difficile.

it is not the hospitals fault ,it is the dirty lazy people who frequent our magnificent hospital, whenever i go to town or the car boot there s always a lot of smelly people ,bolton has a high amount of children with bad teeth compared with the rest of the country BECAUSE their parents are too lazy to clean themselves so their children do not learn too either ,so to the nhs lawyers there is your vital connection for not paying out to some of the scum who will dystroy our health system for good

PART TWO;-from a scientific bio chemist point of view ,the problem IS the people in general (kerry)doctors are filling us with antibiotics as is the food companies especially meat products, the human body then becomes resistant to treatment for MRSA etc therefore present treatment will not work as the gene is constantly changing and mutating into another form, some new treatments work but there is a lot to do ,help your self by saying no to antibiotics for the slightest ailment, the food industry well how do we stop them ?all they are concerned abut is profit, perhaps we should all be vegetarian although i am not i have always felt eating animals is wrong???????

Practical procedures like inserting urinary catheters, central venous catheters, venipuncture and intra venous cannula create an entry point for bacteria to enter blood circulation. Peripheral venous cannula are the most frequently used device in the hospitals. One in 8 patient (70%-80%) entering hospital is treated via cannula.
Millions of venous cannulae are used universally, in UK 17.6 million ported cannulae are used every year. Since 1962 doctors have been using these devices without properly evaluating the consequence. The incidence of significant local or bloodstream infection associated with peripheral venous cannula is said to be higher than initially estimated.
The problem can be made worse by poor compliance with hand cleaning and other hygienic practices by healthcare staff, multiple punctures and using ported cannulae. We strongly feel this significant local or bloodstream infection associated death could be prevented if the healthcare professionals take adequate care when they introduce a cannulae or catheters, especially in emergency situations and stop using ported iv cannulae.
