Council environment bosses are celebrating their third successful year at the North-west in Bloom Awards.

Wigan fought off tough competition to make ‘runner up’ in the ‘Large Metropolitan Borough’ category.

The judges’ visit to key local sites was well received in July, with projects in Atherton, Ashton and the Wigan Flashes attracting particular interest.

They also visited Hindley Prison to see first hand the work done by inmates growing plants and flowers for use all around the borough.

John O’Neill, former deputy leader of Wigan Council and champion for In Bloom said: “I’m proud that we have again been rewarded amid stiff opposition from all around our region.

"I would like to thank those who have made this award possible; community groups, township forums, elected members and officers in the council, Wigan & Leigh Housing, and in the Leisure & Culture Trust.”

The evidence provided by the council’s In Bloom team was considered some of the best the judges had ever seen.

As well as the award, council officers are delighted that the floral displays, eco projects and clean ups are well received by residents.

A survey on the streets of Ashton, Leigh and Wigan saw 85% of respondents saying they were either satisfied or very satisfied with the borough’s floral displays.

This year has seen sustainability move to the top of the agenda, and over 95% of the planting from the Borough In Bloom team was grown in the borough. Often volunteers assist with the work, gaining experience which assists them into full time employment.

Deputy council leader and environment champion, Cllr David Molyneux says: “Wigan Borough in Bloom has helped to bring together various internal and external agencies. More importantly it has brought together members of the community to engage and together enhance their local areas.

"Everyone is a winner, and I’d like to add my thanks to those of the team for another bloomin’ good year!”

Work continues with the winter planting programme already drawn up and further projects proposed for 2009.

Damian is particularly keen to hear from the business community who can sponsor planters and join with the dozens of firms already committed to In Bloom.
