CAMPAIGNERS staged a protest rally in Wigan town centre in their fight to save schools threatened with closure.

Carrying an Atherton Demands Its Own High School banner the campaign group members marched on the town hall to demonstrate against the changes planned under the council's multi-million pound Building Schools for Future (BSF) programme.

Crusades to save Atherton’s Hesketh Fletcher and Ashton, Lowton and Golborne Highs have been merged under the ADIOHS flag.

If plans go ahead the Atherton students would have to go to Tyldesley Fred Longworth, Westleigh and Bedford High Schools while Golborne High would merge with Lowton High to create a monster school with primary and nursery facilities on the Lowton Civic Hall land.

A further meeting was due to take place on Tuesday and the plan will be discussed by the cabinet today (Thursday).

One protester declared: “The fight goes on.”
