Pete toasts festival success

HAPPY anniversary! Big hearted drinkers raised their glasses to salute another successful Bent and Bongs Beer Bash.

The 21st anniversary event organised by Atherton and Tyldesley Round Table and real ale campaigners CAMRA proved yet again just why its a major date in the beer festival calendar.

Legendary pop music producer, train buff and real ale appreciator Pete Waterman made a return appearance on the second day of the festival and spent time chatting to people queuing for admission outside the Formby Hall venue at Atherton.

Obviously impressed Pete remarked: “I thought there was supposed to be a ****** recession on! Atherton has obviously missed it.

“What a fabulous event and brilliantly organised. Fantastic, terrific atmosphere and superb beer.”

Although final figures were still to be worked out as the Journal went to press festival spokesman Paul Hodson said early signs were that the event seemed likely to have raised around £20,000 taking the total raised for charity at the event since ever closer to a third of a million pounds.

Last year's event raised £24,330, taking total proceeds to a staggering £296,913. This year's main beneficiaries are The Meningitis Trust and Cardiac Risk in the Young, although other local charities and worthy causes will also be supported.
