£1.5m plan for popular school

10:28am Wednesday 3rd February 2010

PLANS are underway for a £1.5m extension at the popular Tyldesley Primary School.

Wigan Council is proposing to increase the admission number from 30 to 45 from September 2011 as part of the Wigan Schools for the Future programme.

The school consistently receives more applications for reception class than there are places available and temporary classrooms were placed at the school in 2009 to deal with increased pupil numbers for reception intake in 2009 and 2010.

With birth rates continuing to rise, this will mean the predicted demand for places across primary schools in the area will continue to outstrip the 242 places currently available.

As part of the plans additional permanent classrooms and teaching spaces will be provided.

The temporary classrooms will be removed when extension work has finished.

Headteacher, Yvonne Brown said:” This proposal would provide an excellent opportunity for our school to develop further.”

Cllr Susan Loudon, cabinet champion for children and young people, said: “We need to provide additional places in Tyldesley to meet increased demand and ensure a school place for every child.”

Parents have received the consultation document published on January 18 and a copy is available on the Wigan Council website – www.wigan.gov.uk A period of public consultation is now underway and the closing date for comments is March 12.
