WALKERS are stepping out on Sunday to support pioneering charity Breakthrough Breast Cancer with the fifth Crocus Walk at Pennington Flash Country Park.
The Leigh event organiser Elaine Brogden is encouraging people to join her – or to get out and organise their own Crocus Walks this spring.
Elaine's annual charity walks have proved to be a great day out for particpants and she and her group have boosted Breakthourhg Breast Cancer funds by almost £73,000.
Mrs Brogden said: “I love getting the whole community involved, to have a walk and a catch up, and at the same time to raise money for a cause that is so important to me personally.
"It has become a regular feature in our annual calendar, and I have made some great friends over the years. Anyone is free to join our walk on March 21st - it’s a four mile circuit around the beautiful Pennington Flash Country Park.”
Elaine is the Chair of the West Lancashire Breakthrough Group and she is devoted to raising the awareness of work that Breakthrough Breast Cancer does in research, campaigning and education. Elaine and her group have been fundraising since 2003 and to date have raised a staggering £72,955.
She and some members of the group have been personally affected by breast cancer, so organising the walks has provided the women with a focus and a way to fundraise for a charity that is close to their hearts, as well as getting to know more people in their community.
Anyone interested in taking part in the Pennington Flash Country Park Crocus Walk on Sunday can contact Elaine on 01942 673 734. All walkers are asked to make a minimum £5 donation to Breakthrough Breast Cancer.
Alternatively, if you would like to organise your own Crocus Walk it couldn’t be easier – simply choose a date, place and time and then invite friends and family to join you. Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in the UK and nearly 1,000 women die of the disease each month. Breakthrough Breast Cancer is leading the fight against the disease by developing new treatments, raising awareness and campaigning for better services for patients.
