Life on Mars wheels in Leigh

A CAR used in cult TV drama Life On Mars will take centre stage in Leigh.

The 1974 Ford Cortina, driven by no nonsense, old-style copper DCI Gene Hunt will feature as part of Leigh For All – a two day historical extravaganza.

Tomorrow (Friday, September 10) and Saturday (Sep 11) the vicinity of the civic square will be alive with attractions including a classic car rally, heritage walks, talks, tours, dance and drama highlights.

Local folk duo Chonkin Feckle will perform and Astley based supercar specialist – Keating Supercars Ltd – will also have their Keating TKR on display.

The car has reached speeds in excess of 200mph but was damaged during a failed bid to break the world “blind” speed record in August.

The weekend has been organised by Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust (WLCT) in partnership with Wigan Council, Leigh Parish Church and the Soroptimists.

Linda Marsh, of Wigan’s Heritage Service, said: “Leigh For All is a weekend dedicated to bringing history out and about and engaging people with the past by allowing them to get up close to it.

“There’s lots to see and get involved in and it’s free. Let's make this weekend a weekend of discovery.”

Leigh For All coincides with the national Heritage Open Days scheme where buildings across Wigan and Leigh will be opening their doors for free.

Events take place between 11am and 4pm both days.
