Principal named at Manchester's first free school opening at Atherton

A PRINCIPAL has been appointed for Atherton Community School – the first Free School in Greater Manchester.

The school is scheduled to open its doors this coming September with Elizabeth Haddock at the helm.

She said: “I am thrilled to be taking on the post of Principal Designate of the Atherton Community School. I am looking forward to working with the whole community to create a school that will have a significant and lasting impact that the whole town can be proud of.”

Elizabeth Haddock has had almost 30 years of teaching experience in a range of schools both in Britain and overseas, most recently she opened Salford City Academy where she led the transformation of education from 'satisfactory to good'.

Her recent post was acting Principal of St Peter’s Academy, Stoke on Trent.

Atherton Independent Councillors Bob Splaine and Norman Bradbury who have backed the Chapel Street project from inception said they were overjoyed to hear the news of the appointment, and wished the venture and the Principal every success.

Next Wednesday Chapel Street are to hold meeting in the Jubilee Hall, Atherton at 7.30 pm, when the community will have the opportunity to meet Elizabeth Haddock. Parents and guardians who wish their children to attend the new school will have the opportunity to apply on the night, or download in application form on www.athertoncommunityschool.com Councillor Bradbury said: “ The whole community is overjoyed at the prospect of getting back its own high school in Atherton, let's make sure it’s a success and support it everyway we can. Be there on Wednesday!”
