Animal medics all set for £2,500 mountain challenge

A TEAM of animal medics are taking on the challenge of a lifetime to raise cash for guide dogs.

Vets and veterinary nurses from the Leigh area will climb fells, bike ride trails and paddle a course for the Guide Dogs for the Blind Association.

The six-strong team of Vetcare employees from Leigh and Hindley will become guide dog superheroes taking part in the gruelling Coniston Adventure Team challenge on September 6.

The squad made up of team leader Pulen Moodley, Karen Lord, James Kilmurray, Eleanor Skeel, Tim Crawford and Linda McNulty have spend months training for the multi-sport event which tests the stamina and teamwork of all teams taking part in one of the most beautiful and rugged parts of the Lake District.

The team will hike the fells and climb the Old Man of Coniston, mountain bike the trails of the Grizedale Forest and paddle a course on Coniston Water using sit on top canoes - all within 10 hours.

The team is hoping to raise £2,500 to provide guide dogs to give freedom and independence to blind people, Student veterinary nurse James said: “The challenge struck us all as a fun way to help raise money. Loyal guide dogs are truly special animals and the difference they make to people’s lives is absolutely amazing.”

Guide Dog’s events team member Peter Emmett said: “It costs £10 a day to breed, train and support each guide dog partnership and as the charity relies on voluntary donations to fund its services every penny raised will make a life-changing difference to blind and partially sighted people.””
