Neighbours said that shortly before the fire started, someone was seen throwing objects at children playing in the street and then walking away from the house.
Fire crews from Hindley, Leigh and Atherton, searched the house after it was feared someone was trapped inside.
It took half an hour to bring the blaze under control. The house was gutted and adjoining properties were damaged by smoke.
