FOOTBALL champion and veteran whistleblower Neville Crowther has died, aged 95.
After many years playing football in the local leagues Neville took up refereeing in 1951 and officiated in the Leigh & District League for 32 years until his last game in 1983 at the age of 70.
The highlight of Neville's career was as a linesman at Old Trafford in a match between the youth sides of Manchester United and Newcastle United.

With a great love of football he also spent time as the manager of the successful Tyldesley Amateurs team and after he retired from refereeing he assisted Howe Bridge Mills FC.
A popular character around Tyldesley, Neville will be greatly missed not only by his nine children, 23 grandchildren and 36 great grandchildren but also by the many footballers and friends he made in the area.
Neville's funeral will take place on Thursday, May 8 at 1pm at Atherton Evangelical Church, Alma Street.
