DETECTIVES are appealing for witnesses after a masked man apparently tried to snatch a four-year-old boy from his mother.

The 28-year-old woman and her son had got off a bus in Chapel Street, Leigh, at 11.55pm last Thursday when she saw three men standing at the junction with Holden Road and Manchester Road.

One of the men approached the woman and struck her on the hand, causing her to lose grip of her son's hand.

He then grabbed hold of the boy's hand and tried to walk away.

Two cars travelling along Chapel Street stopped nearby and the man let go of the boy's hand before fleeing towards the other two men.

A few moments later a silver car was seen driving away from the area at speed. No one was injured during the incident and both mother and son are safe and well The first man is described as Asian, tall and of medium build.

He was wearing a black baseball cap, black coat, black trousers and had a black scarf or bandana covering the lower half of his face.

The other two men are described as Asian and were both wearing dark coloured clothing.
