Wonderful display of flower power

9:35am Tuesday 26th August 2008

I’M not the only one cheered by the glorious display of colour every time I drive through Howe Bridge.

I have already described The Promenade as chocolate box pretty and reader Margaret Thompson agrees.

Like me she is calling on other areas to make the same effort next year that the Bridgers’ Community Group have this to create their corridor of colour between Leigh and Atherton.

She writes: “What a wonderful display of flowers there are on the 'prom' this year. Congratulations must go the residents of the area for creating such a pretty environment with the hanging baskets that are outside nearly every house from the old LUT depot up to the Punch Bowl.

“I travel the route from Atherton to Leigh every day as I take my elderly mother from her home in Pennington to mine off Newbrook Road, Atherton. “Without fail she comments on how lovely the flowers look and in some ways they brighten up her day.

“Indeed it puts to shame most other areas. I am appalled as I travel over Leigh Bridge towards what was once considered the 'posh' part of Leigh, yet pass derelict shops and half -renovated houses with boarded up windows and graffiti daubed walls, a stark contrast to the pride on show at the other end of the area.

“If the Howe Bridgers can have such an impact surely other areas could make more effort next year. Perhaps if they did, some decent shops may be attracted to the area instead of the rubbish which just drives people to out of town shopping malls.”
