THE architects behind the Lord Street apartments built on the site of the former Leigh Casino have hit back at the negative comments labelling it Cell Block H.
ARK Design and Architecture feel very strongly that the adverse opinion is ‘premature’ because the scheme is not yet complete, and the external areas are still being formed.
They say the project will include very high quality landscaping, and trees, which will be planted along Lord Street.
The scheme will also include a communal garden at the back which will be extensively planted, and will serve as a quiet oasis. This is something which the firm feels is “sadly lacking” from many recently built apartment schemes around Leigh.
Also, the new building they argue, draws on local historical origins for its inspiration.
Director Ian Moores, said: “The blue bricks used are a reference to the old viaduct at the top of Lord Street / Bradshawgate. Leigh has a large number of buildings detailed in blue brick, and it is therefore a fitting, appropriate design option, with a historic connection.
“The design has been very carefully put together to provide lots of natural daylight for the residents.”
Ian adds: “The windows in particular have been designed very much in proportion to many old sash windows seen on Victorian terraces in the town, and allow the rooms to be flooded with light.
“We know how much care and attention has been given to the development of this apartment scheme, and although design might be considered to be a matter of taste, this new building will definitely be a great place to live.”
